The
British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has got together with the
Lonely Planet to produce a guide for the Over-50’s on foreign travel.
Some of the advice relates directly to UK citizens but the majority is
good sensible travel advice. Those who are not UK citizens can at least
find out what questions to ask about where to find their government’s
representatives and what assistance they would be offered in foreign
countries. The guide can be downloaded at:

Seniors
By Rob Clement
I
do not say Senior citizens as that term in the UK is reserved for those
who are eligible to receive a state pension. Some of you may be in the
same age bracket as I am – in my 50’s.
What
about Travel? Are there places you have been to and want to see again?
Are there places that your spouse has been to that they really want to
take you to visit? Now is the time to travel and see the world!
Maybe
you say I am too old? Perhaps you are now in the over-60’s and you feel
your travelling days are over. Think again. My wife’s grandmother flew
for the first from the UK to Canada and she was 80. Many of the
over-60’s in the UK take the advantage of flying from the UK with its
cold damp winters to the sun of Spain and Portugal for three months.
They benefit from lower fuel bills and less problems with arthritic
joints during the cold damp weather. So travel for the benefit of your
health.
Maybe
you say it is too expensive? Yes it is if you have to travel at the
peak times of the year when the children are off school. BUT you will
either have children who have left home or will very soon leave home.
So what is stopping you having a great vacation in May or in September?
Maybe
you say that you can never afford it? Have you ever taken the trouble
to get a brochure from a Travel Agent or looked at the web for the
information? If you do not have the time, then get your children or
grandchildren to get something. The little children often think that
it’s great to help out grandma and grandpa looking for anything on the
web.
Don’t
forget to take plenty of photographs when you travel. Descriptions can
hardly convey the grandeur of the Alps of the foothills of the
Himalayas. These days, if you use 35 mm film, the photos can be put
onto CD as part of the processing. You can then make copies easily and
you can use a computer projector to show them to all the family at
once. If you have taken the plunge and are already using a digital
camera then you can download all the photos to a CD and share them with
the family.
Remember
your travel insurance to help in times of emergency. Accidents and
incidents do happen even in the best organised holidays. I can still
remember being held up for 8 hours in China waiting for a plane. By the
way the excuse was that they had lost the plane. I know that China is a
big country but has anyone heard of a lost plane in the USA?
Take
the opportunity to take a look at our articles that we have found that
are relevant to you seniors. Then peruse some of the articles on
specific destinations. It will be well worth your while.
